PURPOSE: To investigate the common CT findings of high-grade (HG) PanIN and clinical effects in the remnant pancreas in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred fifty-one patients with surgically confirmed IPMNs (118 malignant [invasive carcinoma/high-grade dysplasia] and 133 benign [low-grade dysplasia]) were retrospectively enrolled. The grade of PanIN (233 absent/low-grade and 18 high-grade) was recorded, and all patients underwent serial CT follow-up before and after surgery. Two radiologists analyzed CT findings of high-risk stigmata or worrisome features according to 2017 international consensus guidelines. They also analyzed tumor recurrence on serial follow-up CT after surgery. Statistical analyses were performed to identify significant predictors and clinical impact on postoperative outcomes of HG PanIN. RESULTS: PanIN grade showed a significant association with IPMN grade (p = 0.012). Enhancing mural nodules ≥5 mm, abrupt main pancreatic duct (MPD) changes with distal pancreatic atrophy, increased mural nodule size and MPD diameter were common findings in HG PanIN (P<0.05). In multivariate analysis, abrupt MPD change with distal pancreatic atrophy (odds ratio (OR) 6.59, 95% CI: 2.32-18.72, <0.001) and mural nodule size (OR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.02-1.08, 0.004) were important predictors for HG PanIN. During postoperative follow-up, HG PanIN (OR, 4.98; 95% CI, 1.22-20.33, 0.025) was significantly associated with cancer recurrence in the remnant pancreas. CONCLUSION: CT can be useful for predicting HG PanIN using common features, such as abrupt MPD changes and mural nodules. In HG PanIN, extra caution is needed to monitor postoperative recurrence during follow-up.

Non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) have emerged as a promising candidate due to their high theoretical energy density and eco-friendly cathode reaction materials. However, LOBs still suffer from high overpotential and poor cycling stability resulting from difficulties in the decomposition of discharge reaction Li2 O2 products. Here, a 3D open network catalyst structure is proposed based on highly-thin and porous multi-metal oxide nanofibers (MMONFs) developed by a facile electrospinning approach coupled with a heat treatment process. The developed hierarchically interconnected 3D porous MMONFs catalyst structure with high specific surface area and porosity shows the enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics associated with Li2 O2 formation and decomposition on the cathode surface during the charge and discharge processes. The uniquely assembled cathode materials with MMONFs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with energy efficiency of 82% at a current density of 50 mA g-1 and a long-term cycling stability over 100 cycles at 200 mA g-1 with a cut-off capacity of 500 mAh g-1 . Moreover, the optimized cathode materials exhibit a remarkable energy density of 1013 Wh kg-1 at the 100th discharge and charge cycle, which is nearly four times higher than that of C/NMC721, which has the highest energy density among the cathode materials currently used in electric vehicles.

Great Salt Lake (GSL), located northwest of Salt Lake City, UT, is the largest terminal lake in the USA. While the average salinity of seawater is ~3.3%, the salinity in GSL ranges between 5% and 28%. In addition to being a hypersaline environment, GSL also contains toxic concentrations of heavy metals, such as arsenic, mercury, and lead. The extreme environment of GSL makes it an intriguing subject of study, both for its unique microbiome and its potential to harbor novel natural product-producing bacteria, which could be used as resources for the discovery of biologically active compounds. Though work has been done to survey and catalog bacteria found in GSL, the Lake's microbiome is largely unexplored, and little to no work has been done to characterize the natural product potential of GSL microbes. Here, we investigate the bacterial diversity of two important regions within GSL, describe the first genomic characterization of Actinomycetota isolated from GSL sediment, including the identification of two new Actinomycetota species, and provide the first survey of the natural product potential of GSL bacteria.

Many countries attract international students to higher education programs to invest in human resources. However, living abroad can be stressful and adversely affect international students' mental and physical health. This study, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, investigated stress-related factors affecting the socio-psychological health of Chinese students, the greatest proportion of international students in Korea. The path coefficients and mediating effects of COVID-19-related stress factors were analyzed via a transaction-based stress model for 307 students using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Cultural adaptive stress had the greatest impact on mental health. Perceived financial stress was not statistically significant. Additionally, because the COVID-19 situation in Korea is relatively mild, anxiety regarding the pandemic did not lead to stress. However, excessive COVID-19-related information on social networking services negatively impacted mental health. Understanding the causes of stress and taking preemptive measures to prevent it will result in positive educational and social impacts for both international students and host countries. This study's results have implications for the formulation of international student policies.

Population-scale single-cell genomics is a transformative approach for unraveling the intricate links between genetic and cellular variation. This approach is facilitated by cutting-edge experimental methodologies, including the development of high-throughput single-cell multiomics and advances in multiplexed environmental and genetic perturbations. Examining the effects of natural or synthetic genetic variants across cellular contexts provides insights into the mutual influence of genetics and the environment in shaping cellular heterogeneity. The development of computational methodologies further enables detailed quantitative analysis of molecular variation, offering an opportunity to examine the respective roles of stochastic, intercellular, and interindividual variation. Future opportunities lie in leveraging long-read sequencing, refining disease-relevant cellular models, and embracing predictive and generative machine learning models. These advancements hold the potential for a deeper understanding of the genetic architecture of human molecular traits, which in turn has important implications for understanding the genetic causes of human disease. The purpose of the study was to which investigate whether dexamethasone, which has anti-inflammatory and immune response suppression roles, could treat noise-induced hearing loss caused by damage to hair cells in the cochlea. The experiment used 8-week-old CBA mice exposed to white noise at an intensity of 110 dB SPL for 2 h, with hearing loss confirmed by the auditory brainstem response test. Dexamethasone was administered by intraperitoneal injection for 5 days, and the therapeutic effect was investigated for 3 weeks. The experimental groups were 3 mg/kg of dexamethasone (3 mpk) and 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone (10 mpk), and the control group was a saline-administered group. The results showed that compared to the control group, the hearing threshold value was recovered by 10 dB SPL compared to the saline group from the 14th day in the 3 mpk group. In the 10 mpk group, thresholds were recovered from the 7th day compared to the saline group. This difference was similar at 4 kHz, and in the case of the 10 mpk group, the threshold was recovered by 20 dB SPL compared to the saline group. The study also confirmed the restoration of nerve cell activity and showed a recovery effect of about 20 µV in the amplitude value change in the 10 mpk group. In conclusion, the study suggests that dexamethasone has a therapeutic effect for noise-induced hearing loss by increasing the activity of nerve cells and showing a recovery effect from hair cells damaged by noise.

The metal halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 (MAP) can be applied as the shell layer of lead sulfide quantum dots (PbS QDs) for improving solar power conversion efficiency. However, basic physics for this PbS core/MAP shell QD system is still unclear and needs to be clarified to further improve efficiency. Therefore, in this study, we investigate how MAP shell thickness affects device performance and dynamics of charge carriers for PbS QD-sensitized solar cells. Covering the PbS QDs with the MAP shell layers of an appropriate thickness around 0.34 nm greatly suppresses charge carrier recombination at surface defects along with improved carrier transport to neighboring oxide and polymer layers. Therefore, this MAP shell thickness provides the highest open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor for solar cells. Overall power conversion efficiencies of these solar cells reached about 4.1%, which is about six-fold higher than that for solar cells without MAP (about 0.7%). Additionally, use of the MAP shell layers can prevent oxidation of PbS QDs and, therefore, makes a degradation of solar cell performance slower in air.

Chronic stimulation can cause T cell dysfunction and limit the efficacy of cellular immunotherapies. Improved methods are required to compare large numbers of synthetic knockin (KI) sequences to reprogram cell functions. Here, we developed modular pooled KI screening (ModPoKI), an adaptable platform for modular construction of DNA KI libraries using barcoded multicistronic adaptors. We built two ModPoKI libraries of 100 transcription factors (TFs) and 129 natural and synthetic surface receptors (SRs). Over 30 ModPoKI screens across human TCR- and CAR-T cells in diverse conditions identified a transcription factor AP4 (TFAP4) construct that enhanced fitness of chronically stimulated CAR-T cells and anti-cancer function in vitro and in vivo. ModPoKI's modularity allowed us to generate an ∼10,000-member library of TF combinations. Non-viral KI of a combined BATF-TFAP4 polycistronic construct enhanced fitness. Overexpressed BATF and TFAP4 co-occupy and regulate key gene targets to reprogram T cell function. ModPoKI facilitates the discovery of complex gene constructs to program cellular functions.

Marinolides A and B, two new 24- and 26-membered bacterial macrolactones, were isolated from the marine-derived actinobacterium AJS-327 and their stereostructures initially assigned by bioinformatic data analysis. Macrolactones typically possess complex stereochemistry, the assignments of which have been one of the most difficult undertakings in natural products chemistry, and in most cases, the use of X-ray diffraction methods and total synthesis have been the major methods of assigning their absolute configurations. More recently, however, it has become apparent that the integration of bioinformatic data is growing in utility to assign absolute configurations. Genome mining and bioinformatic analysis identified the 97 kb mld biosynthetic cluster harboring seven type I polyketide synthases. A detailed bioinformatic investigation of the ketoreductase and enoylreductase domains within the multimodular polyketide synthases, coupled with NMR and X-ray diffraction data, allowed for the absolute configurations of marinolides A and B to be determined. While using bioinformatics to assign the relative and absolute configurations of natural products has high potential, this method must be coupled with full NMR-based analysis to both confirm bioinformatic assignments as well as any additional modifications that occur during biosynthesis.

Diabetes is a prevalent and debilitating metabolic disorder affecting a large population worldwide. The condition is characterized by insulin resistance and impaired function of pancreatic ß-cells, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. In this study, the antidiabetic effects of Erigeron annuus extract (EAE) on zebrafish with damaged pancreatic islets caused by insulin resistance were investigated. The study utilized the zebrafish model to monitor live pancreatic islets. RNA sequencing was also conducted to determine the mechanism by which EAE exerts its antidiabetic effect. The results showed that EAE was effective in recovering reduced islets in excess insulin-induced zebrafish. The effective concentration at 50% (EC50) of EAE was determined to be 0.54 µg/mL, while the lethal concentration at 50% (LC50) was calculated as 202.5 µg/mL. RNA sequencing indicated that the mode of action of EAE is related to its ability to induce mitochondrial damage and suppress endoplasmic reticulum stress. The findings of this study demonstrate the efficacy and therapeutic potential of EAE in treating insulin resistance in zebrafish. The results suggest that EAE may offer a promising approach for the management of diabetes by reducing mitochondrial damage and suppressing endoplasmic reticulum stress. Further research is required to establish the clinical application of EAE in diabetic patients.

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is one of the most common conditions among patients visiting emergency departments in Korea. GI bleeding is divided into upper and lower GI bleeding, according to the bleeding site. GI bleeding is also divided into overt and occult GI bleeding based on bleeding characteristics. In addition, obscure GI bleeding refers to recurrent or persistent GI bleeding from a source that cannot be identified after esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy. The small intestine is the largest part of the alimentary tract. It extends from the pylorus to the cecum. The small intestine is difficult to access owing to its long length. Moreover, it is not fixed to the abdominal cavity. When hemorrhage occurs in the small intestine, the source cannot be found in many cases because of the characteristics of the small intestine. In practice, small-intestinal bleeding accounts for most of the obscure GI bleeding. Therefore, in this review, we introduce and describe systemic approaches and examination methods, including video capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy, that can be performed in patients with suspected small bowel bleeding in clinical practice.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common condition that results from the loss of function of hair cells, which are responsible for converting sound into electrical signals within the cochlea and auditory nerve. Despite the prevalence of SNHL, a universally effective treatment has yet to be approved. To address this absence, the present study aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of TS, a combination of Cuscutae Semen and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata. To this end, both in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to evaluate the efficacy of TS with respect to SNHL. The results showed that TS was able to protect against ototoxic neomycin-induced damage in both HEI-OC1 cells and otic hair cells in zebrafish. Furthermore, in images obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an increase in the number of kinocilia, which was prompted by the TS treatment, was observed in the zebrafish larvae. In a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) mouse model, TS improved hearing thresholds as determined by the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test. Additionally, TS was found to regulate several genes related to hearing loss, including Trpv1, Cacna1h, and Ngf, as determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that TS holds promise as a potential treatment for sensorineural hearing loss. Further research is necessary to confirm these results and evaluate the safety and efficacy of TS in a clinical setting.

Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is one of the most important light sources in the plant industry for enhancing growth and specific metabolites in plants. In this study, we analyzed the growth, primary and secondary metabolites of 10 days old kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) sprouts exposed to different LED light conditions. The results showed that the highest fresh weight was achieved under red LED light, whereas the highest shoot and root lengths were recorded below the blue LED light. Furthermore, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed the presence of 13 phenylpropanoid compounds, 8 glucosinolates (GSLs), and 5 different carotenoids. The phenylpropanoid and GSL contents were highest under blue LED light. In contrast, the carotenoid content was found to be maximum beneath white LED light. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) of the 71 identified metabolites using HPLC and gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) showed a clear separation, indicating that different LEDs exhibited variation in the accumulation of primary and secondary metabolites. A heat map and hierarchical clustering analysis revealed that blue LED light accumulated the highest amount of primary and secondary metabolites. Overall, our results demonstrate that exposure of kohlrabi sprouts to blue LED light is the most suitable condition for the highest growth and is effective in increasing the phenylpropanoid and GSL content, whereas white light might be used to enhance carotenoid compounds in kohlrabi sprouts.

Background and Objectives: Advanced liver fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can be a major predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and cardiac complications. However, the clinical significance of cardiac symptoms and abnormal electrocardiography (ECG) findings in patients with NAFLD associated with advanced liver fibrosis is unclear. Therefore, our study was aimed to evaluate the clinical implications based on the association between cardiac symptoms with ECG abnormalities for advanced liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. Materials and Methods: Of 31,795 participants who underwent health checkups, 6293 were diagnosed with NAFLD using ultrasound and inclusion criteria in a retrospective cross-sectional study. Advanced liver fibrosis was assessed based on a low NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS) and fibrosis-4 index (Fib-4) cut-off values (COVs). Cardiac data were assessed using a cardiac symptom questionnaire and 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG). Results: Among 6293 NAFLD patients with NAFLD, 304 (4.8%) experienced cardiac symptoms. NFS and Fib-4 indicated higher rates of advanced fibrosis in the cardiac-symptomatic group than in the non-symptomatic group (NFS: 7.3 vs. 4.1%; Fib-4: 7.8 vs. 3.7%; both p < 0.001). Cardiac symptoms were independently associated with advanced liver fibrosis using a step-wise-adjusted model and NFS and Fib-4 (final adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.40; 95% CI, 1.06-1.85; p = 0.018 for NFS; aOR, 1.67; 95%, 1.30-2.15; p < 0.001 for Fib-4). Cardiac symptoms with abnormal ECG findings independently predicted advanced liver fibrosis (aOR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.72-3.39; p < 0.001 for NFS; aOR, 3.02; 95% CI, 2.19-4.15; p < 0.001 for Fib-4). Conclusions: Patients who have had cardiac symptoms and some ECG abnormalities may have a higher association with advanced liver fibrosis.

The introduction of device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) in the beginning of 21st century has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the small intestine. In contrast to capsule endoscopy, the other main diagnostic modality of the small bowel diseases, DAE has the unique advantages of observing the region of interest in detail and enabling tissue acquisition and therapeutic intervention. As DAE becomes an essential procedure in daily clinical practice, there is an increasing need for correct guidelines on when and how to perform it and what technical factors should be considered. In response to these needs, the Korean Association for the Study of Intestinal Diseases developed an expert consensus statement on the performance of DAE by reviewing the current evidence. This expert consensus statement particularly focuses on the indications, choice of insertion route, therapeutic intervention, complications, and relevant technical points.

Analyzing household food waste data at the global or national level remains a challenge, especially owing to lack of statistical systems and socio-cultural differences. This study determined the factors affecting the intention of households to reduce food waste on Jeju Island and on the Korean mainland. Socio-demographic factors significantly influence household food waste generation. Therefore, studies are often conducted depending on data availability in the corresponding regions. Based on national data and the theory of planned behavior, this study analyzed data using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling) to test the influence of multiple determinants and parameters on dependent variables and investigated the awareness of household food waste in Korea, focusing on Jeju Province, Korea's largest tourist destination. A survey of 508 local residents established that all factors evaluated in this study, except for risk concerns due to COVID-19, were statistically significant. Among the three antecedents of age, income, and family size, age significantly affected all mediators, directly affecting behavioral intentions. The results are consistent with those of preceding research on the effects of socio-demographic drivers on household food waste generation. The results also indicate that in Korea, where the COVID-19 infection level is lower than that in other countries, residents did not change their food purchasing and waste production patterns. However, a multi-group analysis revealed that the risk concerns caused by COVID-19 differed between residents of Jeju Island and mainland Korea. Overcoming the vulnerability of waste management, including food dumping, is mandatory for locals and tourists on Jeju Island.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly characterized by a short lingual frenulum and severe form needs release surgery. Our goal in this study was to confirm the long-term safety and efficacy of Z-plasty with genioglossus myotomy compared with traditional Z-plasty alone and to develop a proper measurement tool to validate the postoperative results of release operations for ankyloglossia. Patients were divided in 2 groups, release with Z-plasty only group (group 1) and Z-plasty combined with genioglossus myotomy group (group 2) In group 2, the release of central longitudinal fiber of genioglossus muscle was added in the conventional Z-plasty operative procedure. To analyze the results of the surgery, we developed an objective assessment tool which is the direct length from the innermost point of the floor of mouth to the tip of the tongue, preoperatively and postoperatively, which is called "functional tongue length." A total of 101 patients with ankyloglossia ranging in age from 36 months to 8 years underwent release operation. Although there was no significant difference in terms of postoperative measurements between groups in Kotlow class II, group 2 patients in Class III and IV showed greater postoperative functional tongue length. Also, there was no significant complication requiring secondary surgery. Our study demonstrated that adding genioglossus myotomy to a simple Z-plasty is a safe and effective method for improving the tongue mobility required to make lingual sounds, especially in moderate to severe form of ankyloglossia, along with suggestion of a new measurement tool, which can objectively assess tongue mobility with possibility for universal utilization in ankyloglossia release operation.
